help about projects

good afternoon to every one.iam recently joined this forum .
iam doing my final year project in cse and i have less knowledge about how to choose project and proceed.
can u plz suggest me which side is better.
when i asked my hod he suggested me to do a project for college which gives all details of all 1st year(whose pattern rules and regulations have changed)
and gives theirmark lists by calculating standard deviation and giving grades of students. can any one say whether it is a good and useful project for me,if it is good can any one say me how to proceed for it.

Sounds ok, though this is not such a good project, since it is just related to DB, and some front end script.
You can do this using many approaches.
1: PHP + Mysql
2: Java[JSP] + Mysql
3: ASPX + SQL
4: VB6.0 + SQL
5: VB .NET + SQL
There many other ways.
First you need requirements, and then need to design your front end. After which the coding begins.
