| Java the language is basically COBOL and useful in some areas. Java the Virual Machine/Platform has a solid future. A lot of languages are now using the JVM.

| It depends on what field you are in. If you understand Object Oriented Programming then moving between Java and .Net is mostly syntactical. I wouldn't rule either one of them out. Try to maintain knowledge in both areas and you should be in good shape.
