| Try subtracting the first number from the second number. If you get the same difference as subtracting 2nd from 3rd, and 3rd from 4th, you have an arithmetic sequence, with a common difference between terms. Example : 1 , 4 , 7, 10 , 13 , 16, etc. 4-1=3, 7-4=3,10-7=3 -- same difference each time, so this is an arithmetic sequence that you can find the next number of by adding 3 -- and 19 , 22 , 25 will be the next three terms.These can be summed quickly with this formula : 1st term + last term x number of terms / 2If the example ended with the 25, this would be 1 + 25 x 9 / 2 = 26 x 9 / 2 = 13 x 9 = 117
