It means don't respond to ignorant or inflammatory questions. By spending your time and energy induldging childish behaviour, you are lowering yourself to their level. Thus by association you become like them.

This answer is actually a perfect example. By merely referring to such behavior I have lent my power to it and now I just feel dirty

Goes along with "iron sharpens iron"...if you sully your iron with a steaming pile of...you know...all you get is crappy iron. You are judged by the company you keep.
