How to resolve bad credit that was made through company errors?

So, the debt collectors think my husband is dead, and i guess from answers from my last question, that is really going to hurt my credit since the letter was in reference to me being his personal representative. since he's dead and all, they want his all his credit card debt paid NOW, and by me... great huh? after this whole situation is resolved i will have a plummet on my credit score and i don't have enough money to talk to a lawyer about erasing that. any help here?
