Neither really. The 1904 version, a landmark in silent film, was simply the title of the short. The 1979 film with Donald Sutherland and Sean Connery was more a comedy thriller. It's just a coincidence that they are all the same title.

i have never seen the 1904 one

but the 1979 one was based on MC's book.

In fact to do the book he got ahold of the original court transcripts and thats what he based it on. the trial of those involved.
